At Alameda Greenhouse we have a great selection of bagged soils and compost. Here is a guide to what we typically carry and the best uses for each product.
Potting Soil
Just like it says, potting soil is most commonly used for pots and containers but can be used in small beds to richen up the soil.

Compost
Used as an amendment to native soil when planting trees, shrubs, perennials, or annuals into the ground. It is usually recommended to use no more then 50% of the bagged amendment in proportion to the existing soil.
